Why choose organic cotton?

At Dadamora we prefer to use mostly organic, GOTS-certified cotton. The organic cotton thread for our fabrics is grown in India, but we are proud that all of our fabrics are woven right here in Estonia. But why is organic cotton better?

Cotton is one of the most widely grown crops in the world and growing conventional cotton is also one of the most chemical-intensive processes. These chemicals impact the air we breathe, the water we drink, the soil we grow our food in and obviously the health of people in cotton-growing areas. The chemicals used to grow cotton are classified as some of the most toxic ones.

Chemicals used in the production of non-organic cotton will end up in your and your child’s clothing and may cause allergies and skin irritations – in fact, 100% non-organic cotton items are actually 73% cotton and 27% chemical leftovers used in production!

At the same time, organic cotton is grown using methods and materials with low impact on the environment. Organic production works in a way that keeps the soil fertile and replenished and reduces use of pesticides and fertilizers. Certification organizations like GOTS (The Global Organic Textile Standard) make sure that the methods and materials are allowed in organic production.

Fabrics made of organic cotton have not been bleached or treated with formaldehyde, which makes them softer and more durable. Kids and especially babies have very delicate and sensitive skin, which means that any chemicals that are used in the fabric of your child’s clothing could be absorbed by their skin. By buying and wearing clothing made of organic cotton, you are doing a favour for both your child and the environment.

And remember – buy less, choose well, make it last! ♥
